India’s passion for cricket knows no bounds! Apart from thrilling international matches, the BCCI organizes high-profile events such as the IPL, Ranji Trophy, and domestic cricket tournaments all year round. This time, another new tournament is set to be added to this list. Inspired by the success of T20 leagues for retired cricketers around the world, the BCCI is also thinking of launching a similar tournament.
The Indian Champions team was in terrific form at this year’s World Championship of Legends. They defeated Pakistan by 5 wickets in the final under Yuvraj Singh’s leadership. Robin Uthappa scored a fifty in the match. Tournaments like the Legends League feature former cricketers from around the world, including Indian legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh, Yusuf Pathan, Irfan Pathan, Zaheer Khan, and others.
Former cricketers, led by Yuvraj Singh, have requested the BCCI to organize an IPL-like tournament for retired players in India. BCCI President Jay Shah is considering the proposal. A BCCI official said, “We have received a proposal from retired cricketers regarding this, which is currently under consideration. But it is still in the proposal stage.”
Sources suggest that a new tournament for former cricketers might start next year. A BCCI official stated, “Organizing the tournament immediately is not possible, but we can consider it for next year. This league will feature players who have retired from international cricket and do not play in the IPL.” No cricket board has ever organized a tournament exclusively for retired cricketers, so if the BCCI moves forward with this, it will be a revolutionary decision.
